Norwegian painter, Steinar Jakobsen, born and educated in Oslo, works with a variety of reductive techniques - scratched Plexiglass and oil paint removed from aluminum. The result resists any single interpretation. His works are heavy with both historical influences and an immediate sense of contemporaneity. The elaborate and meticulously painted works are contradictory in nature, filled with uplifting Northern light yet foreboding and isolating at the same time. According to curator Jarle Stromodden, "They can be seen, or read, as art-as-art in the sense that they are simply beautiful to look at. In addition - and this is perhaps most important - they are art about our culture."
Steinar work is represented in several collections, including The Museet for Samtidskunst and the Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst. Jakobsen is represented jointly by Galleri K, Oslo and Sara Tecchia Roma New York.
